Lack of hospital beds at the Opokukrom Health Center in Ahafo Ano South
West District of the Ashanti region has forced pregnant women to deliver
on benches.
Attendance at the Out Patients Department of the facility, which serves
about 25,000 people in 22 communities, has increased making it difficult
for staff to attend to pregnant women in labour.
The doctor in charge of the health center, Dr. Castro Adu Obeng revealed this to Adom News.
According to him, medical staff are forced to administer treatment on benches, chairs and on the floor.
He said the facility was also lacking in furniture and the source of drinking water is also in a bad state.
Dr. Obeng indicated that residents, both males, and females sometimes
have no option than to share one ward which has only four beds.
Assembly member for the area, Aremeyaw Amadu, told Adom News the
facility has twenty-four nurses and four midwives and a General Doctor
but has only a 3 room nurses' bungalow, a situation he describes as very
worrying.
He stated that the health center has enough land for the construction of
wards and workers' bungalows and therefore appealed to the government
to help construct adequate facilities.
